What Iptunnel Does

A Private Road Through Public Wires

An educational guide to IP tunneling - how VPNs, SSH tunnels, and encapsulation carry private traffic safely across networks you don't control.

🔐

Tunneling Explained

Encapsulation and encryption - how a packet rides inside another packet across untrusted wires.

⚖️

VPN Protocols Compared

WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IPsec weighed on speed, auditability, and ease of setup.

🐚

SSH Tunnels

The admin's pocket tunnel - forwarding a port securely with one command.

🏠

Self-Hosted VPN

Running your own tunnel endpoint at home or on a rented server, step by step.

🔀

Split Tunneling

Sending only chosen traffic through the tunnel - and the leaks to watch for.

🧐

Honest Limits

What a tunnel protects against, what it cannot, and the marketing claims to ignore.

How Iptunnel Works

From signup to value in 3 steps

1

Pick the Protocol

Match WireGuard, OpenVPN, or SSH forwarding to your use case and platforms.

2

Stand Up an Endpoint

Configure the far end - a home router, a small server - and exchange keys securely.

3

Verify the Seal

Test for DNS and traffic leaks so the tunnel protects everything you think it does.

Frequently Asked

What does a tunnel actually protect?

The traffic in transit between you and the tunnel's far end - anyone on the path sees only encrypted packets. It does not make you anonymous and does not protect data beyond the endpoint.

Should I use a commercial VPN or run my own?

Commercial services are convenient for travel and geo-shifting; self-hosting gives you a trusted endpoint you control for reaching home resources. Many people sensibly run both.

Does a VPN slow my connection down?

Encryption overhead is minor on modern hardware; most slowdown comes from the detour through the tunnel endpoint. A nearby, uncongested endpoint often costs under 10 percent.
